Lotte Reiniger 1926
The film took three years to make. Animated entirely using cut-out silhouettes, Lotte Reiniger along with her husband Carl Koch, Walter Ruttmann, Alexander Kardan and Berthold Bartosch had constructed a multi-plane camera stand in order to shoot the images. Some of techniques used had never been implemented before and were the fruit of often weeks of experimentation. It is the first animated feature length film and demonstrates a firm creative independance from the more typical ‘cartoon’ creations of the era.
